ABOUT MY PROJECT
The name of the project that I came up with is “Smart Carbon Dioxide Reducer”. Lately, the effect of climate change has started to cause strange or extreme weather to happen around earth. For example, according to The Guardian in 27th June 2019, large scale wildfires can be seen in Spain and France and Western Europe have been sweltered in extreme heat wave which is around 44 degree Celsius. Many flora and fauna perished in the fires and to make matter worst, forest fires also contributes to the increase of greenhouse gases. So, to combat climate change, we have to start small which I have chosen Paris, France as the city that I will be integrating my smart system, because it contains the most data on carbon dioxide concentration.
As we all know, plants undergo photosynthesis during the day and undergoes respiration during the night. In other words, it absorbs carbon dioxide when there is light available and absorb oxygen when there is no light available. Since plants is a natural Carbon Dioxide converter, we can use the plants in the city to convert carbon dioxide in the city during the day and night. This smart system mainly works during the night to optimize oxygen production and carbon dioxide reduction. By obtaining live carbon dioxide reading data from the sensors which will be sent via cloud to the designated areas around the city. Those designated areas will have lamp post that are equipped with solar powered LED plant bulb. According to Vernier news the best light source for photosynthesis is LED plant bulb because it produces a very strong output in the blue and red wavelength which is what the chlorophyll in the plants needs for photosynthesis. The LED plant bulb will be using IOT technology to control its light intensity. For example, when the carbon dioxide concentration is below a certain value, not much carbon dioxide need to be absorb, the light intensity will be low and vice versa.
On another note, by using the data on Carbon Dioxide concentration we can limit the amount of vehicles on the road. This can be done by increasing frequency of public transport or increasing toll charges into the city. Increase toll charges based on the live concentration of Carbon Dioxide in the city will encourage people to take public transport more regularly. Needless to say, the toll system also has to be connected to the cloud system via IOT technology in order for it to work.
As a conclusion, the system can help reduce greenhouse gases significantly. Furthermore, this entire smart system lies in the cloud where all its algorithm or logic is implemented based on the data input from the sensors in the city. As we can see, the entire system is completely automatic and does not require human intervention which relates back to the Smart City and Transportation concept.
My name is Lim Wei Jie also known as Jerald Lim, 20 years of age. I am from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Currently studying Electrical Engineering at University of Malaya. Since young, I have been always fascinated about robotics and automation and how they work. For example, why is it not possible to build magnetic levitation cars instead of trains or self-driving car system which is fully controlled by a system build by engineers or controlled by artificial intelligence. As for my future career goals, it is the same for most engineers, which is able to design or invent something that is beneficial to the people of the world. This will increase the productivity and save cost too.
